The unit that Randy Orton served in while he was in the U.S. Marines Corp when he went AWOL issued a thank you to WWE through TMZ for removing the former WWE and World champion from his role portraying a Marine in the Marine: Homefront WWE Studios movie.

“On behalf of all the Marines from Aco 1/4 98-02, that were outraged to hear about Randy Orton portraying a Marine in the next movie “Marine: Homefront”, I’d like to thank the WWE for pulling Orton from the role when they heard about his disloyal service to the United States Marine Corps,”
Cpl. Mike Vinn said.

Vinn served in the same unit as Orton when he went AWOL in 1999. Orton eventually was sentenced to military prison for 38 days and was dishonorably discharged later.

Yeah, that's all well and good, but where was this complaint when John Cena made that terrible fucking Marine movie?

Yeah, I understand that Randy Orton committed a serious offense, and made a terrible decision in his life.... But even so, at least Orton kind of has some experience with the marines even if it was a very negative one. Cena never even had that, and yet he starred in a movie that should have rightfully pissed off the Marine Corps far more with how they were portrayed in that film.

I mean, really, what is worse? Playing a Marine when you have some Marine experience, even though you went AWOL, or playing a Marine when you don't really know anything about it, and have no frigging actual clue what being in the Marines is actually even like?

I dunno. What's your thoughts on this?

Chalk and cheese. There's no way you can compare a man (Orton) who was a real marine and had to leave in disgrace to somebody who simply made a bad movie. Cena's film was rubbish but, at the same time, there have been equally poor films about marines and all types of soilders before. I don't think the marines would look at the film and think 'hey, people are going to think we suck just because this movie with a wrestler sucked'. After all, most films with wrestlers suck.

On the other hand Orton clearly has some experience of bein a marine but that doesn't mean it wouldn't have sucked. More important, certainly to the serving men at least, would have been the fact that heres a guy who used to be one of them and disgraced that tradition and they are not thinking of putting him in a film playing that same thing. They key word is disloyal, that's how he's viewed by at least some of the marines. Cena simply sucked as an actor.

So I don't think there's any real comparison.

Hmm. I think that's a reasonable way to look at it.

I guess lack of experience would end up being less offensive than having a real life marine deserter playing a marine in a movie.

Still, I gotta think this has got to be a big blow to Orton. I'm sure that to him, this role was probably, in his mind, a way to try and apologize for his actions in the past, and to try and honor the marines in his own way.

Obviously though, they don't see it that way. It's probably for the best that he's not in the film.

Even though, let's face it... this isn't going to be a good movie, no matter who you put in it.

I'd imagine the film would probably make Orton's character out to be a hero by the end of it too. If you were a Marine it would probably leave a nasty taste in your mouth!

Agreed - on both it being something that would leave a bitter taste and it not being a good movie!

Agree with your view on this, Myron. However, I do find it interesting that the US military have been happy to have Orton do a shed load of personal appearances at their bases. So they are happy to have him associated with them in one way.

Obviously they just thought this was a step too far.

You make a good point. I guess that while he's seen as a wrestler it's OK for them but when he's more closely associated with the marines it's a bit too much Smile

Also, as far as I know, it's mainly his former unit and his old commanding officer that was upset about it.

I'm not even sure if the entire Marine organization feels the same way that Corporal Mike Vinn does.
