...as I will be watching Scorpion King 1-3 (well, 2, 1, 3 as the second one is set before the first), freshly delivered yesterday. Watch the mighty Rock. The rugged Randy Couture. The one that was in Power Rangers and the the other one from Mutant X. Ron Pearlman and Billy Zane...in the same film!!! Very Happy

There's a quality cast list if ever there was one.

I have high hopes! The fact they have lots of swords in has got to be a win...and it can't be worse than Ghost Rider: Sprit of Vengence!

That really wasn't a good film, even by the standards of some of the the other dross we have watched together.

I really wanted to like that film. I mean I enjoy most of Cage's work. Some of it's outstanding, some of it's popcorn. But that one didn't even qualify as the second one!

Thing is, virtually as soon as we walked out of the cinema, I'd forgotten just about everything about it. It just didn't register or stay in my memory. A girl, a kid who's the son of the devil, some god of decay, Christopher Lambert, bike not as cool as the first one. That's about as far as my mental record goes.

And that, for one, shows just why it was poor!

I only saw the Scorpion King 1 at the cinema, I didn't know there were 2 sequels, were they both straight-to-DVD releases?

I rate Nic Cage highly. Not only does he have brilliant taste in UK counties to live in, Con Air is one of my favourite films of all time. What a movie!

Yup. The second one, which is actually set before the first film and shows The Rock's character when he's younger, also stars Randy Couture. The guy playing Mathays (sp?) was a Power Ranger at one point! It's fun, sort of Conan meet Jason and the Argonauts feel. Just my sort of thing.

The third one, set after the Rock film and ending just before the stuff we see in the Mummy Returns movie, has Ron Pearlman and Billy Zane in it. It also has Victor Webster in it. If anybody watched the X-men knock-off Mutant X he was the tall, dark haired electricity slinger. We're watching that tonight.

While I can't speak for his taste in counties (Wink) I'm like you. I love Con Air. For sheer popcorn it's hard to beat. Just the premise alone (let's put all our worst criminals on one plane...what could go wrong?) brings a smile to my face. I also love loads of his other stuff. The Rock, Season of the Witch, Raising Arizona, Wild at Heart, Face Off...the list goes on. Most of the time he's enjoyable even if the movie isn't great. But in this one he just seems bored!

There are indeed some great Nic Cage movies around. Con Air is a definite favourite, as is Raising Arizona, and stuff like Snake Eyes, Gone in 60 seconds, Face/Off, and the Rock are all worth a watch. Even Knowing wasn't utterly awful, and I actually liked the first Ghost Rider.

But as Myron says, Cage really looks like he couldn't have given the first part of a toss about Ghost Rider 2. For a project he was so behind as far as the first movie was concerned, he clearly did this one either out of contractual obligation, or because the money was good for very little work. You can tell it reeks of the studio having no confidence (passed off to an Eastern European director and shot in Europe) and just wanting a cheap cash-in and that lack of giving a damn has infested the cast to the point where they - especially Cage - don't get much past showing up and reading the lines.

He looks broody for a bit, screams and acts manic a lot to show off unconvincing special effects (the 3D was crap) and that's about all he needs to do. He knows the movie will suck, so why bother?

I put this in stark contrast to another bubblegum 3D movie I watched this weeked, the Three Musketeers. Simialrly ridiculous OTT premise, similar throwing in lots of 3D tricks (but this time done well) but the studio had faith in the project and the actors seem to be having a ball with it - especially Orlando Bloom who is better than he's ever been in anything. Result, a film which is a lot of fun, despite being utterly silly. I really enjoyed it.

I really liked the 3M. Like you say, pure bubblegum fun. I've always liked Bloom. He's like Reeves for me - not the greatest actor but always seems to find roles I like him in. So it was good to see him in a mustache twirling villian role. Smile

Scorpion 3 is the best of the lot, sort of like a film version of Hercules or Xena. Plus I'm sorry, Dwayne, but Victor Webster was a better SK than you (plus he may even be able to kick your butt being trained as a king boxer and a black belt in one of the martial arts...).

For fight fans I give you Dave Batista and Kimbo Slice (or Kevin, as his mum calls him...) as two of the Warriors of the Book...
