I know that David was a little disappointed that they didn't do more with the Superman uniform in the new film. I personally think it looks OK but agree that it would have been better to give it a more modern, even futuristic feel. Our hero is supposed to be alien, after all! In the new reboot that DC is doing they are doing that by modernising his look (including taking away the red 'pants' bit). But I thought this reboot of Superboy (Connor Kent, a clone of Supes and Lex Luthor) was even better...

SuperTron!

Now THAT is a look. Do that with the suit in dark blue, hightlight the House of El logo in yellow, and we have a winner.

Just think it's about time they moved the look on in the movies.

BTW, they are doing a spin on the Connor Kent angle in Smallville.

I've read about it. I really mean to get into Smallville, esp now there are so many people from the DC world in it. Braniac, Zod, the Green Arrow, Impulse (Flash)...even Booster Gold and the Wonder Twins! Will pick up a cheap boxset at some point and take it from there...

...plus they have really, really cool merchandise!

I'm sure I've got the season 1 box set lurking around here somewhere to get you started. Next time I dig through the cupboard.

Just watching Stephen Fry's 100 greatest gadgets. Had me shouting at the TV when he claimed the ZX Spectrum was the first machine to bring computer games into the home market.

The iPod better win this!

Nice, did you draw that Myron? Looks a bit better than his trademark costume, I always thought that looked ridiculous.

What won on the Gadgets top 100? Funny, I came in and it was on the TV and for some strange reason I thought of Dave's hilarious footnotes of that other top 100 of something they had earlier in the year.

I wish! Nope, it's a concept peice for the new DC, where they are rebooting their universe. Most of the big names, and a lot of the smaller ones, are getting brand new outfits!

The winning item was....... the lighter!

Yes, the lighter. On the grounds that its somehow magical to be able to produce fire from your finger tips.

Yes, it might well have been 20,000 years ago when we needed to use fire to fend off sabre tooth tigers and cook mammoth steaks, or a few hundred years ago when we needed flaming torches to light our way, but now we have electric ovens, LED torches, and street lights. I don't need to light a fecking fire, I'm not Bear Gryles! Unless you smoke, the lighter is pointless, and you can't make something the number 1 gadget purely because it assists a habit which is increasingly social unacceptable now that its main function is obsolete.

The wristwatch was number 2, and really I could have seen that winning. A reliable portable timepiece was hugely important for all sorts of reasons.

Similarly the iPod was number 3 - a machine that revolutionised the way we store, listen to, and buy music. The biggest selling gadget of all time. Really that could have won.

Or the Internet, which didn't make the top 20, or the telephone - without which there could be no internet. Even the television at number 4 for the way it has changed people's view of the world.

But the lighter is just incredibly fucking stupid.

I thought the internet might make it in there. I thought the Ipod might do well but it's not quite ad widely used as the internet, which really did open up the world. But not the lighter. Through in the fact you can light BBQs, etc with it and even then you're looking at something that only just about beats matches!

And by in there I mean to the number one spot, rather than in the big list!

Well, as I've said on Facebook, I thought more about it and stuff like the TV, the telephone, and the Internet are all fantastic, but they might be more great "Inventions" than they are great "gadgets".

There needs to be an air of show-off-edness about a gadget, and an air of "you don't really need it, but its nice to have". That's why I think the iPod should have won. No-one really needs one, but everyone who has one knows its unbelievable brilliant. It started as a cult item the world was skeptical about but now the world has embraced it in huge numbers, and its successfully shifted the way we do things in the way we look at owning and accessing music.

Mmmm...I agree to a degree but I would argue it's a fine and fuzzy line between gadget and invention. Either way the lighter just doesn't cut it!

Yeah that's true about the iPod, I think you're right it should be no. 1. The lighter, hahaha. I'm glad I didn't watch it now that would have been an anticlimax and a half

I agree that there is a fuzzy line between an invention and a gadget, and in fact lots of things are in both camps of course. But somehow it doesn't feel right to put stuff like the television and the telephone in the same group as the sandwich toaster and automatic apple peeler.
