1. What was the furthest from home you traveled during 2011?
uh. A used game shop on the edge of town.
Mjolnir wrote:

That used game shop on the edge of town.
Mjolnir wrote:
3. What was the most pleasantly surprising place you went?
That used game shop on the edge of town when I saw many things for sale that I needed to get that I didn't think would be there.
Mjolnir wrote:
4. What place was the biggest disappointment?
The other game shop near me, where I found after I ordered 4 Christmas presents that I couldn't find before, all of them were now there a week after I checked last time for much less than I had just payed.
Mjolnir wrote:
5. What was the best book you read this year?
Chris Jericho's new book.

I havn't watched much TV, but the new 2011 return of Beavis and Butt-Head was exceptional, every bit as fresh and hilarious satire of our devolving culture as it was then. It's a completely different era now than it was in the mid 90's, and somehow the show is just as socially relevant and goddamned funny as ever.
Mjolnir wrote:
7. What was the TV series which you were most pleasantly surprised by?
At the (quite brave) risk of being laughed at, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a surprisingly amazing complete re-invention of an admittedly terribly stupid overly girly franchise from the 80's.

As an animated series goes, it is helmed by the same minds that made The Powerpuff Girls in the late 90's a hilarious, clever, witty and surprisingly accessible-past-it's-basic-demographic show that is both exceptionally clever and fun, and couldn't be better for that.

...although I do admit that it is still hard to not feel silly when saying the franchise title with a straight face. Razz But I stand by that it's rare to see what used to be such purile marketing drivel a decade ago, be imbued with such charm and personality, now. This show is, and it's a great surprise.

....seriously, don't laugh at me. >_>
Mjolnir wrote:
8. What was the worst thing you saw on TV?
Hard to say. I've usually managed to avoid seeing shit (like TNA for example) that I already know I won't like before seeing it. But I actually did give that new Power Rangers Samurai show a watch for a few episodes. It was horribly awful. I was drawn in by nostalgia alone for a show I once watched the first 3 seasons of as a tyke. Then I realized just how terrible the new actors are, how awful the new scripts are, and how piss-poor the take on the adaption was. (Seen some of the original japanese, and besides not understanding a word of it, it appeared so much more genuine than the US version is.
Mjolnir wrote:
9. What news event shocked you the most this year?
I was shocked by just how out of hand this ridiculous "occupy wall street" bullshit got in such a short amount of time. Much like most of anything else politically charged that came out of 2011, it was just another thing that only succeeds in making most people on both side of the "debate" look like idiots.
Mjolnir wrote:
10. What was the best live performance you saw this year (music or any other kind)
Really havn't watched or been to any.
Mjolnir wrote:
11. What was the best movie you saw this year at the cinema?
Honestly, this year has been a pretty pathetic year for movies. Barely anything notable or even worth mentioning was released all year. I struggled to find at least 2 films I could say were good that I even bothered to see. That would be Cars 2 and The Muppets. I'll probably put the latter just slightly over the former.
Mjolnir wrote:
12. What was the best movie you saw this year on DVD/BR/DL
To be honest, I had to look up what movies even came OUT on DVD this year, to even remember any. I can't think of any based on the list I saw. So all I can say is just various past movies that I've liked and some shows on DVD season sets.
Mjolnir wrote:
12. What movie exceeded your expectations most this year?
I was hoping The Muppets would, at least, be a decent film to return the characters with. I was happy to see the movie was not only an incredible film, but the third best Muppet film.
Mjolnir wrote:
13. What movie most failed to live up to the hype?
The Thing 2011. A monumental piece of absolute fucking shit and a horrible blemishing embarrassment on the legacy of the amazing, previous John Carpenter film.
Mjolnir wrote:
14. What was the most expensive thing you bought this year?
This replacement laptop.
Mjolnir wrote:
15. Best gadget of the year?
Sorry, don't tend to buy these.
Mjolnir wrote:
16. Biggest waste of money this year?
The previous laptop that fucked up on me after spending over 9 months paying $140 a month for it, just to lead me to spend $500 to get one that works again after suffering a terrible hard drive loss, leading me to just waste all the money I put into that laptop previously for nothing.
Mjolnir wrote:
17. Best video game of the year?
I have to honestly say.... and you knew this was coming... WWE '12. Arkham City and Sonic Generations being close 2nd places.
Mjolnir wrote:
18. Best food you ate this year?
This gigantic, beautifully cooked, $9 full pound Cheeseburger from a local restaurant that were making giant well-done steak burgers with home-made steak sauce to go with it. Absolutely wonderful, and I consider myself a big cheeseburger fan.
Mjolnir wrote:
19. Best night out you had this year?
I never go anywhere interesting or out of the ordinary that isn't the same old irritating, boring, standard grind. So I guess this doesn't apply, because I don't really go anywhere interesting or do anything worth mentioning with my life, tbh.
Mjolnir wrote:
20. Thing you are looking forward to most in 2012?
Maybe WWE '13. Maybe The Dark Knight Rises, perhaps. Although I don't think at ALL that it's going to happen, if the end of the world just happens to occur as was sloppily predicted by a bunch of nuts... I'd honestly be all for that. A little 'pocalypse never hurt nobody.
Mjolnir wrote:
21. Thing you are looking forward to least in 2012?
The year 2012.

OK, its getting to that time of the year again. End of year survey time!!!

1. What was the furthest from home you travelled during 2011?

No foreign holidays for me this year, and I didn’t go up to Scotland, so I suspect the furthest I travelled was actually one of the business trips to Darlington, County Durham. A windswept desolate place which hosts our Northern office. Been there many times over the years, and while there are a couple of decent hotels and restaurants, its not somewhere you would choose to go for a vacation!

2. What was the best place you visited?

I really loved the Cotswolds. Had a great time down there, the place is stacked with amazing pubs and places to eat, lovely buildings, a great brewery, fantastic villages stuffed with antique shops, its great. And the place we stayed at had its own hot-tub. Fantastic.

3. What was the most pleasantly surprising place you went?

A fantastic little pub in a tiny village in the Cotswolds. It was run by an Irish woman called Assumpta who was one of the most remarkable women I have ever met. 20 seconds in the place and she’s treating you like a long-lost family member. Come back the following night and she remembers your name and what you were drinking. What’s more, the food was some of the very best I have ever tasted in a pub.

4. What place was the biggest disappointment?

Probably Anne of Cleeves’ house in Lewes. It’s a lovely old building and its always interesting to look around a building with that history. There aren’t many Tudor period homes left. But then you find out that despite the name, and despite her owning the house, they can’t even be sure that she ever visited it, let along stayed there. So its really just an old house, which is fair enough, but not exactly consistent with the sales pitch!

5. What was the best book you read this year?

Steve Jobs: The Exclusive Biography – by Walter Isaacson. A fantastic biography of an amazing man.

6. What was the best TV series you watched this year?

Game of Thrones, with Boardwalk Empire running it a close second.

7. What was the TV series which you were most pleasantly surprised by?

Blue Bloods. Recorded it not expecting much, but really got into it.

8. What was the worst thing you saw on TV?

There really is so much to pick from, but its hard to think of much that’s worse than “The Only Way is Essex”. For our American friends, this is sort of an Englsih version of Jersey Shore, except with people who are even more vacuous, empty-headed, pig-excrement thick non-entities.

9. What news event shocked you the most this year?

The Japanese tsunami probably takes some beating.

10. What was the best live performance you saw this year (music or any other kind)

Choice between stand-up comedian Mickey Flanagan, and the IPW tag team match pitting the Leaders of the New School against Paul London and El Generico. The former was a wonderfully worked comedy set from a comedian who is really coming into his own now. The latter was probably the best match I have ever seen live, and just a perfect example of the art of professional wrestling.

11. What was the best movie you saw this year at the cinema?

I’m honestly not sure. I’m trying to remember what I saw towards the start of the year. I’ll need to come back to this I think.

12. What was the best movie you saw this year on DVD/BR/DL

I really enjoyed “Unknown”, the Liam Neeson one, and “Kenny”. “Senna” would also be up there as its an amazing documentary.

12. What movie exceeded your expectations most this year?

Probably “Anonymous”, the recent one about the theory that Shakespeare didn’t write his own plays. It was a fabulously put together movie, even if I don’t believe the theory.

13. What movie most failed to live up to the hype?

Limitless. A really good idea but just very poorly executed. It didn’t hang together as a movie at all.

14. What was the most expensive thing you bought this year?

A brand new Skoda Superb Estate 2.0TDI170 Elegance in steel grey with black leather interior. :0)

15. Best gadget of the year?

As above, if a car is a gadget, or if not then the self-parking system on the car. Find a space, drive past it, take your hands off the wheel, and the car drives itself into the space. Alternatively, my Apple TV is pretty cool.

16. Biggest waste of money this year?

The Peugeot garage that hung on to my old car for 2 months to fix an ignition barrel!

17. Best video game of the year?

Forza Motorsport 4 on the Xbox 360. Its about as perfect a driving video game as you are likely to find. Honourable mention to WWE All Stars, which was so much better than any of us had a right to expect it to be.

18. Best food you ate this year?

The pork scratchings I had at Jamie Oliver’s Barbecoa restaurant in London. I was never a great fan of pork scratchings until I tasted these things. They were unreal. I could have sat there all night with just a bowl of those.

19. Best night out you had this year?

Had a few good nights out this year with different people at different things. But I reckon my Summer school reunion will take some beating. The reunions are always good nights, but we got far more of our old teachers at this one than we were expecting, and it was just a great laugh.

20. Thing you are looking forward to most in 2012?

The 18 day tour of Scotland that I have organised for May 2012. Really looking forward to that.

21. Thing you are looking forward to least in 2012?

The Olympic games coming to London. Its going to be an utter nightmare for anyone that has to live or work in the City over the Summer. We are woefully ill-prepared to still operate everything in London and then have this event on top.

1. What was the furthest from home you travelled during 2011?

Uhhh...Derby or Newquay, I'm not sure which is technically further!

2. What was the best place you visited?

Newquay, went just before all the school leavers start coming, so had a really good time.

3. What was the most pleasantly surprising place you went?

Derby County FC. Mainly because I expected the stadium to be souless and dead, to find it was completely the opposite. Also because we won as well, did not expect that result.

4. What place was the biggest disappointment?

Probably my trip to Dawlish a few months back, didn't enjoy it as much as I normally do. I don't think the weather helped!

5. What was the best book you read this year?

Hahaha, books.

6. What was the best TV series you watched this year?

A tough one. I would probably say Being Human, I was drawn from start to finish.

7. What was the TV series which you were most pleasantly surprised by?

Missfits. I didn't want to watch it, but I saw a couple of episodes from this latest series and found it quite amusing.

8. What was the worst thing you saw on TV?

Comedy Central's comedy, "Threesome". It was nothing short of rubbish.

9. What news event shocked you the most this year?

Probably Gary Speed's death. Partly because it was very recent and a lot has happened this year, but mainly because he was such a well thought of public figure.

10. What was the best live performance you saw this year (music or any other kind)

Jimmy Eat World. Caught them in Cardiff. They are one of the best live acts around.

11. What was the best movie you saw this year at the cinema?

I'm not sure I went this year, how sad!

12. What was the best movie you saw this year on DVD/BR/DL

Hangover 2, loved the first one, loved the second one.

12. What movie exceeded your expectations most this year?

Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Heard very mixed things about that film, but thought it was very very good.

13. What movie most failed to live up to the hype?

Cowboys vs Aliens. Just don't do it.

14. What was the most expensive thing you bought this year?

My tickets to the states next year.

15. Best gadget of the year?

That I got myself? My Galaxy S-II. Amazing piece of kit.

16. Biggest waste of money this year?

I've been very prudent this year, so only a few poor video games I suspect!

17. Best video game of the year?

Haven't played too many this year. So just to annoy Mike, it was Final Fantasy XIII. It would have been Sonic Generations, but I'd almost ran out of things to do on it after 2-3 weeks (about 6-7 days of proper gaming sessions).

18. Best food you ate this year?

There's a place in Wells called Café Piano. It serves some of the best food in the City for a realistic price. You do have some more high calibre places around, but this place sits just under them. Anyway, I had the most enjoyable lamb shank there I've probably ever had.

19. Best night out you had this year?

There's been a few. Some of the evenings in Newquay deserve a mention. To be honest, I've had a lot of good and bad ones this year, I couldn't really rank anything that stands out.

20. Thing you are looking forward to most in 2012?

States, South Dakota. Cannot wait for that in April.

21. Thing you are looking forward to least in 2012?

Not sure, I'm going to start studying again in September, not too high on that. Also I've potentially got an even bigger workload coming next year, so that may not be fun. Oh...that end of the world thing doesn't sound too great either!

1. What was the furthest from home you travelled during 2011? Scotland. Not a very widely travelled year, although we went camping a fair bit. But I did go up for work.

2. What was the best place you visited? Castleton. We tried a new camp site, with awesome views and a lovely vibe.

3. What was the most pleasantly surprising place you went? Chatsworth. I've been loads before but never really explored half of it. Epic place!

4. What place was the biggest disappointment? Really can't think of one.

5. What was the best book you read this year? The one I've just finished, Defenders of Ulthuan

6. What was the best TV series you watched this year? Game of Thrones

7. What was the TV series which you were most pleasantly surprised by? Not so much surprised, as David had recommended it, but I was a little surprised just how awesome it was.

8. What was the worst thing you saw on TV? Anything on BBC News 24...

9. What news event shocked you the most this year? Not shocked but surprised that the supposedly intelligent people who did the Occupy nonsense actually thought it would have a positive effect!

10. What was the best live performance you saw this year (music or any other kind) Jools Holland

11. What was the best movie you saw this year at the cinema? Thor and Troll Hunter

12. What was the best movie you saw this year on DVD/BR/DL I do have Thor sitting next to me...but I'd say Rare Exports

12. What movie exceeded your expectations most this year? The Book of Eli. A very good film that didn't get half the praise it deserved.

13. What movie most failed to live up to the hype? Super 8. I'm a fan of JJ Abrams but his work with Spielberg just turned out to be the worst bits of each person.

14. What was the most expensive thing you bought this year? Not bought but the money I paid to get our cat fixed up after his accident was the biggest spend. On an actual item my new laptop.

15. Best gadget of the year? My backscratcher!

16. Biggest waste of money this year? There's stuff we would have rather not spent but nothing that was a waste.

17. Best video game of the year? Skyrim!!!!!!!!!

18. Best food you ate this year? Any cottage pie that Helen made me...

19. Best night out you had this year? Too many to mention Smile

20. Thing you are looking forward to most in 2012? Mass Effect 3!

21. Thing you are looking forward to least in 2012? Well, if those Mayan's get it right...Wink
